Gemma gets a cheat sheet for your coding assistant
Google ships two skills that teach AI coding agents how to actually work with Gemma models.
What it does
gemma-skills is a pair of installable knowledge packs for AI coding assistants. gemma-dev covers building applications with Gemma and answering general questions about the models; gemma-trainer covers training, fine-tuning, and adapting them — SFT, DPO, RLHF, reward modeling — on local hardware. Instead of your agent guessing at Gemma APIs and training recipes, it gets curated instructions to draw from.
The interesting bit
It’s essentially glue, but useful glue: the value is that the model vendor itself is packaging its own expertise into the emerging “skills” ecosystem rather than leaving it to community folklore. The repo is deliberately assistant-agnostic — it installs via Vercel’s skills CLI, Context7, or Antigravity’s plugin system.
Key highlights
- Two skills:
gemma-devfor app-building and Gemma knowledge,gemma-trainerfor fine-tuning workflows on local hardware - Works across multiple AI coding assistants and package managers
- Official Gemma team content, not a third-party approximation
- Python-oriented, lightweight repo — the skills are the product
Caveats
- Explicitly not an officially supported Google product, and excluded from Google’s vulnerability rewards program
- The README doesn’t specify which assistants are actually compatible beyond the three install routes, or how current the skill contents are kept
Verdict
Worth installing if you use Gemma with an AI coding assistant and are tired of it hallucinating model details. If you’re not in the Gemma ecosystem, there’s nothing here for you.
