What it does

Kanzo runs a kanban board at localhost:4242 and speaks MCP out of the same process. You manage tasks in the browser; your agents pick up tasks, move cards to doing, and leave comments as they work — on your machine or on a board shared across several computers. Everything lives in ~/kanzo (a SQLite kanzo.db plus a config.toml), and you never edit a file by hand.

The interesting bit

The agent integration is the clever part: agents find the right project automatically from the git remote of the repo they’re working in, and marking a task “Human” makes agents leave it alone. Sharing is setup-free — kanzo share on on one machine, kanzo join <ip> on the others, with a Raspberry Pi as a permanent board host being an explicitly supported pattern. There’s also git-based sync via a private repo for machines you use one at a time.

Key highlights

  • Single 4.5 MB binary, SQLite included; 4.5 MB RAM idle, 8 MB with 3,000 tasks, 2 ms startup (measured on an Apple M4)
  • MCP tool list costs about 900 tokens per session; agent replies run 10–60 tokens of plain text
  • Board sharing over LAN or VPN (Tailscale, NetBird, WireGuard mentioned), no accounts, no config
  • kanzo export dumps the board as Markdown or JSON
  • Self-updating: the sidebar offers new releases, one click installs

Caveats

  • No authentication on shared boards — the README says to share only on a network you trust
  • Benchmarks are self-reported on one machine (Apple M4)
  • AGPL-3.0, which matters if you plan to ship a modified version over a network

Verdict

If you run coding agents like Claude Code or Codex and want a shared, local-first task board instead of pasting TODOs into prompts, this is a genuinely tidy fit. If you need multi-team project management with permissions and history, it’s not that — and doesn’t pretend to be.
