Two Claude Code skills that close the loop between reading and retention

What it does

Two Claude Code skills ingest documents or codebases and generate a structured Obsidian StudyVault. tutor-setup analyzes PDFs, EPUBs, HTML, or entire source trees and emits interlinked concept notes, dashboards, and practice questions with hidden answers. tutor then runs interactive quiz sessions and updates a concept-level proficiency map based on your answers.

The interesting bit

The project treats comprehension as a closed loop rather than a one-time export. It auto-detects whether you pointed it at a document pile or a codebase—switching from literature-review mode to new-developer onboarding mode—and tracks your weak areas across sessions so drills rephrase missed concepts in new contexts instead of repeating the same flashcard.

Key highlights

• Auto-detects input type: finds package.json, pom.xml, Cargo.toml, etc. to trigger Codebase Mode, otherwise uses Document Mode for PDFs, EPUBs, Markdown, and HTML.
• Generates structured Obsidian vaults with numbered topic folders, Map of Content dashboards, and wiki-linked cross-references.
• Document Mode produces comparison tables, ASCII diagrams, and active-recall questions using Obsidian fold callouts.
• Codebase Mode traces request flows and data flows, then creates per-module notes and onboarding exercises (code reading, debugging, extension tasks).
• Quiz sessions adapt to proficiency badges (Weak, Fair, Good, Mastered) stored per concept, tracking attempts, error notes, and last tested dates.

Caveats

• Requires Claude Code CLI and the npx skills ecosystem; it is not a standalone Obsidian plugin.
• Obsidian is listed as “recommended” rather than required, though the generated vaults use Obsidian-specific conventions like fold callouts and wiki-links.

Verdict

Worth a look if you are trying to onboard onto an unfamiliar codebase or cram from a pile of technical PDFs without hand-writing Anki cards. Skip it if you do not use Claude Code or if your note-taking religion forbids Obsidian.
