An AI agent that paints inside your Aseprite, one undoable pixel at a time
An MCP server that lets Claude, Codex or Cursor draw, animate and export pixel art directly in the Aseprite document you have open — with a critic reviewing the work.
What it does
Aseprite AI Artist is a TypeScript MCP server plus an Aseprite extension that gives coding agents a brush. Your agent connects to the Aseprite window you already have open and draws sprites, rigs them onto layers, animates walk cycles, and exports spritesheets — all in the live document, not as a PNG dumped behind your back. Every action is a single undo step, and if Aseprite isn’t attached, the tools refuse rather than quietly editing files on disk. Works with Claude Code, omp, OpenCode, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code and Windsurf; the authors report best results with Claude Opus 5.5.
The interesting bit
The drawing trick is oddly literal: the agent types the frame out as a text grid, one character per pixel (each character mapped to a palette entry), and draws that in one call. To fix something, it reads the canvas back in the same format and edits only the wrong characters. Because it sees the whole shape as text, silhouettes stay even and edits don’t spill into neighbouring pixels. There’s also a separate read-only pixel-critic skill that judges the result cold, and fixes are kept only if the critic prefers them in a blind A/B — so a revision round can’t quietly make things worse.
Key highlights
- 18 tools grouped by noun (
draw, look, layer, frame, export) rather than ninety — fewer tools, less context burned per turn. - A knowledge base of 62 rules, ~400 pixel templates and 2006 palettes (console classics plus Lospec’s most-downloaded) that the agent consults instead of improvising a 16px hand.
- A public gallery and benchmark at pixeli.pebbly.space, with prompts, models and
.asepritesources for every piece. - Headless mode for CI or batch asset generation; everything binds to
127.0.0.1. - The grid loop reportedly moved benchmark scores from 3→4/10 (mage) and 1→3/10 (road) with the same model and prompts — the authors call it early signal, not a measurement.
Caveats
- The critic’s effect on quality is explicitly not yet measured; it costs roughly one extra critique per round.
- Requires Aseprite 1.3+ and Node 22.6+; odd installs (Steam, custom folders) need extra docs.
- Benchmark numbers are the project’s own, from three fixed prompts — treat as directional.
Verdict
Game developers and pixel-art hobbyists already living in Aseprite with an agent on standby should try this — it’s the rare agent tool that respects your document. If you don’t own Aseprite or want finished art in one shot, a diffusion model is the cheaper date.
