Let the business team vibe-code; the engineers still gate the merge

What it does

Windmill is an open-source, self-hostable platform for workflows, internal apps and AI agents, written in Rust. You write plain functions in 20+ languages (Python, TypeScript, Go, Bash, SQL, Rust, and more), and Windmill turns each script’s typed parameters into a generated UI, an HTTP endpoint and a CLI command. Scripts compose into flows, data pipelines, AI agents, or full React/Svelte apps, triggerable by schedules, webhooks, Kafka, WebSockets, emails and more.

The interesting bit

The pitch is “build with AI, ship with review”: business teams use browser-based AI sessions to generate scripts, flows and apps in a workspace fork, with a live preview and a diff — but protection rulesets block direct deployment, so nothing reaches production without an engineer’s sign-off. Meanwhile engineers keep working locally with the CLI, VS Code extension and Git sync, landing in the same workspace. It’s the governance layer most vibe-coding tools quietly skip.

Key highlights

  • Claims to be the fastest self-hostable workflow orchestrator, benchmarked against Airflow, Prefect and Temporal
  • Managed Postgres data tables queried with type-checked SQL, no connection strings exposed; DuckDB and DuckLake for lakehouse-scale data
  • Workflows as code: each task runs as its own job with its own logs, and waitForApproval releases the worker while waiting
  • Two-way Git sync, MCP server for coding agents, and an MCP/skills setup generated for Claude Code and Cursor
  • Pipelines (alpha) wire scripts by the data they read and write instead of a hand-drawn DAG; dbt projects run unmodified

Caveats

  • AGPLv3 license — fine for most, but commercial licensing questions go to Windmill Labs, which sells dedicated instances and support
  • The “fastest orchestrator” claim rests on their own benchmarks; the README doesn’t show the methodology
  • Pipelines are explicitly labeled alpha

Verdict

A strong pick if you want n8n/Retool/Lovable energy without handing your internal tooling to a SaaS, and you have engineers willing to man the review gate. If nobody on your team wants to review diffs, the governance story is theater.
