A fan translation outpaced by its own success
Community effort to translate Sutton & Barto's RL bible into Chinese, now gently nudged toward the official version.

What it does
This repo hosts a Chinese fan translation of Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction (2nd edition), the classic Sutton & Barto textbook. Chapters 1–11 and 15 are roughly translated; the rest remain unfinished. An online HTML version is built with Sphinx and hosted at rl.qiwihui.com.
The interesting bit
The README’s first line is admirably honest: the official Chinese translation has been published, so this project is now in “irregular maintenance.” It’s a rare open-source grace note — the maintainer redirects readers to the paid book rather than letting a half-finished project linger as SEO bait.
Key highlights
- 11 of 17 chapters have at least rough translations (chapters 1–11, plus 15)
- Built with Sphinx for web-readable HTML output
- Includes the book’s original cover image and symbol notation guide
- Explicitly points readers to the official Douban-published translation
Caveats
- Translation quality is marked “rough” (粗译) for most chapters; only chapter 1 had even rough proofreading (粗校)
- Chapters 12–14 and 16–17 are blank
- The “irregular maintenance” status means little future work is planned
Verdict
Worth a bookmark if you need quick reference to specific chapters and can’t access the official translation yet. If you’re serious about studying, buy the published book — the maintainer agrees.
