The project uses computer vision and deep learning models to detect faces and recognize emotions from the user’s webcam feed. It was built as an interactive documentary to demonstrate and critique Big Tech’s emotional surveillance practices. The system applies AI techniques described in corporate patents to reveal what facial analysis can infer about users. It was exhibited at the Tribeca Film Festival, Tate Modern, and won the 2020 Webby Award.
