Obsidian's AI copilot keeps your notes out of the cloud

What it does

Copilot for Obsidian embeds an AI assistant directly inside your note-taking app. You chat with individual notes or your entire vault, run quick commands on selected text, and—if you pay for the Plus tier—unleash an autonomous agent that can search the web, read PDFs, analyze images, and draft new notes without hand-holding. The plugin supports any OpenAI-compatible or local model, so you’re not tethered to a single provider.

The interesting bit

The project’s anti-lock-in philosophy is unusually explicit. The README frames Big AI as a trap—your data, their servers, your dependence—and pitches this as the escape hatch: portable markdown commands, self-hosted models, and “AI that grows with you, not a subscription you’re hostage to.” Whether that’s vision or marketing, the technical backing is real: local storage, optional embeddings, and BYO API keys.

Verdict

Worth a look if you live in Obsidian and want AI assistance without shipping your notes to a SaaS. Skip it if you don’t already use Obsidian or if free-tier limitations—no autonomous agent, no multi-source synthesis—would frustrate your workflow.
