Rent the model, own the brain: a self-hosted agent that swaps LLMs like parts
Javis OS keeps your memory, skills, and history as plain markdown on your own machine, so switching from Claude to Gemini costs you nothing.

What it does
Javis OS is a self-hosted agentic AI you run on a laptop or small VPS. It talks to 14 providers — Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini, OpenRouter, Ollama, any OpenAI- or Anthropic-compatible endpoint — and every brain gets the same toolkit: MCP tool calls, skills, background task queues, loops, reminders, and a voice-controlled dashboard. The pitch is that the model is a swappable part while everything you accumulate stays with you.
The interesting bit
The “Second Brain” is just a folder of markdown: MEMORY.md, one file per fact, an Obsidian-compatible wiki, skills and agents as SKILL.md and agents/*.md. Every learning pass is a git commit you can undo, and the whole brain syncs to a private repo. If Javis vanished tomorrow, your knowledge would still open in any text editor — which is the actual answer to chatbot lock-in.
Key highlights
- 14 providers, switchable from a dashboard page; multiple brains can run at once (strong model for chat, cheap one for background work, local Ollama for private notes)
- Conversations live in a local, full-text-searchable SQLite store regardless of which model answered
- Background work: loops, reminders, a Kanban task queue, and scheduled agents that report back
- Interfaces beyond the dashboard: voice, Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, Zalo, and a CLI
- CLI engines (Claude Code, Codex, Grok, Antigravity) additionally get shell access, web fetch/search, and parallel sub-agents
Caveats
- The README itself warns that running Claude Pro/Max subscriptions in continuous background loops or on a VPS falls outside Anthropic’s “ordinary personal use” scope — account-locking risk is real and acknowledged
- Non-CLI providers only reach the outside world through Javis’s own tools, not shell or sub-agents
- A running instance can’t see CLIs installed after startup; you have to restart
Verdict
Worth a look if you’ve ever felt trapped by a year of chat history living in someone else’s format and want an agent that works while you sleep. If you just want a chat box, this is considerably more machine than you need.
