Blender, but the chat window actually does the work
Mixar is a GPL Blender 5.2 fork that bolts an AI agent, layered texture painting, and text-to-3D generation directly into the editor.
What it does
Mixar is a full fork of Blender 5.2 with a custom overlay: an in-app chat agent called Mixie that can plan and execute multi-step scene tasks (modeling from prompts, painting textures, fixing UVs, setting up materials), a Photoshop-style layered texture-painting system with masks, baking, UDIMs and decals, and AI 3D generation (text-to-3D, image-to-3D) with retopology and auto-unwrap. All the normal Blender features — sculpting, animation, rendering — remain intact alongside the additions.
The interesting bit
The architecture is an overlay, not a hard fork: upstream Blender lives in a submodule and Mixar’s Python addon and C++ additions get rsynced on top at build time, so tracking future Blender releases stays clean. Also notable: the paint module is seeded from ucupaint, and the whole thing is GPL-3.0 like Blender itself — the AI backend is the only closed part.
Key highlights
- Mixie agent drives Blender directly: multi-step tasks like modeling, painting, and UV fixes from chat
- Layer-based painting with node-driven materials, masks, modifiers, baking, UDIM support, and asset export
- Text-to-3D and image-to-3D via Hunyuan and other providers, plus retopology and auto-UV-unwrap
- Bring-your-own-key routing for OpenAI/Anthropic so you skip Mixar’s hosted credits
- Neural embedding search across your asset library; moodboards can generate whole scenes
Caveats
- The AI features require a Mixar account and talk to a closed-source hosted backend over HTTPS/WebSocket — only the non-AI parts (Blender, paint module, file IO) work offline of it
- Building it means building Blender, plus Python 3.11+, rsync, and on Windows a very specific Visual Studio version — this is not a casual compile
- External pull requests are not open yet; contributions are bug reports only for now
Verdict
Worth a look if you want an agent actually operating inside your 3D editor rather than pasting prompts into a website. If you wanted a fully local, self-hosted AI pipeline, the hosted backend will disappoint you — but the layered painting and overlay architecture are interesting even without it.
