What it does

源内 (GenAI) is the Japanese Digital Agency’s production platform for letting civil servants spin up and use specialized generative AI apps. It started as a fork of AWS’s open-source GenU reference architecture, then diverged hard: team management, app governance, monitoring, and a pluggable microservice layer for external AI apps. The design system comes straight from the agency’s own digital identity guidelines.

The interesting bit

Government IT projects usually ship with accessibility as a line item. This one actually ran JIS X 8341-3:2016 AA-level audits internally and publishes the failures — image generation parameter controls still have accessibility gaps, and they note other pages may too. That’s unusual honesty for any repo, let alone a ministry’s. They also reject pull requests entirely and limit issues to “fatal, data-loss, or compliance-breaking” bugs, which is a refreshingly blunt stance on maintenance scope.
