Glassmorphism that doesn't fight the reader
A one-stylesheet design system that gives shadcn/ui a tactile, glass-without-the-glare look built for agent interfaces.

What it does
Solid Glass is a design system for AI applications — chat threads, agent workspaces, tool steps, diffs, reasoning panels. The core of it is a single CSS file that re-skins your existing shadcn/ui components by hooking into their data-slot attributes and existing classes, so your components need no changes. On top of that sit its own components: status-glyph, composer, tool-steps, diff-view, context-ring, reasoning, and friends — the furniture of an agent UI.
The interesting bit The aesthetic argument is unusually well-articulated: it positions itself between flat design (opaque, no finish) and liquid glass (so transparent that text fights the background). Solid Glass lets only an outline through — enough to read as glass, not enough to hurt readability. The Create page exposes the material’s dials (thickness, tint, rim, blur) and hands you the few lines of CSS your choices produce.
Key highlights
- One stylesheet, no component rewrites — it targets shadcn/ui’s existing
data-slothooks and defines the same variable names - Agent-specific components: turn status, tool steps, diffs, ask-cards, context-fullness rings, reasoning display
- Works in light and dark, though dark is the material as designed
- “Blocks”: whole agent-workspace screens you can copy in, not just isolated widgets
- Four design rules enforced throughout: finish at the edge, heavy not airy, depth is thickness, one state
Caveats
- Requires a fairly fresh stack: React 19, Tailwind CSS 4, and shadcn/ui’s Base UI components — older shadcn setups may not line up
- You must delete the
:rootand.darkcolor variables fromshadcn init, since Solid Glass redefines them
Verdict If you’re building an agent or chat interface on current shadcn/ui and want it to look considered rather than default, this is one of the few design systems actually designed for that job. If you’re not on the React 19 / Tailwind 4 stack, it’s a look-but-don’t-touch.
