What it does

Textus is a WYSIWYG Markdown editor for macOS, Windows and Linux, built with Tauri (Rust shell, React front end). It renders every Markdown mark as you type, handles math, tables and Mermaid diagrams, and exports to PDF, Word and HTML. The AI layer is opt-in: the editor works fully without it.

The interesting bit

The AI is framed as an editor, not a ghostwriter. Edits arrive as proposals with reasons attached, which you can accept whole or sentence by sentence — notes, not rewrites. It also learns your style and remembers your characters and places, which suggests it’s aimed at long-form writers rather than people generating blog filler.

Key highlights

  • Live-rendered Markdown with four writing modes: Zen, Typewriter, Split View and Source Code, plus Typora-compatible themes
  • Works with 20+ LLM providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, Ollama) or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint
  • Privacy-first: plain .md files stored wherever you choose, keys kept locally, requests go device-to-provider, no telemetry or accounts
  • Plugin system for note graphs, kanban, version history, Zotero citations and more — each plugin asks permission before using anything
  • Fully offline editor; with a local Ollama model, your words never leave the machine

Caveats

  • The README is unusually polished — almost marketing-grade — so expect fewer rough edges documented than a typical 500-star repo
  • “It learns your style” and “remembers your characters” are stated without detail on how, or what data that involves
  • iPhone and iPad support is listed as coming soon, not shipping

Verdict

Worth a look if you want a Typora alternative with AI that behaves like a copy editor instead of an autocomplete bully. Skip it if you’re allergic to LLMs in your writing tools — though the editor itself stands alone just fine.
